MASTERCLASS LIBRARY COLLECTION

The following is my personal Trading & Finance book collection. In a sense, it is my 'trading' laboratory. I have literally spent years digging and ploughing through countless books, magazines, seminars, concepts, strategies, systems and methodologies presented by many world renowned Master Traders and Gurus from nearly every corner of this planet. I have traded, back-tested, forward tested, experimented, modelled, re-modelled, constructed and then later deconstructed countless trading systems, be it technical, fundamental, quantitative, intermarket-correlational, random or behavioral-based! This tumultuous journey for the elusive 'Holy Grail' has been one of the most exciting adventures of my life!

Once you get beyond the books, beyond the charts, beyond the data, beyond the never-ending stream of seminars and beyond all the industry-related hype, you will find that 'truth' itself is purely a state of perception. Most trader's only 'see' what they choose to 'see', and when the market expresses itself in every shape and price behaviour imaginable, they will be constantly forced to keep 're-focusing' their sights, beliefs, approach, understanding and parameters in order to cope with the ever elusive market action. Only a small minority of traders finally start to open up and understand what trading is really all about. I kid you not! Anyway, I will leave this topic for further discussion in my Masterclasses! For now, I will present my views and reviews of as many books as I can from my library, as and when I am able. Obviously, most of my observations below are more in the form of brief remarks than a full write up, as time is rather limited for a full blown review of all 600+ books, DVDs, periodicals, etc. ! After all, it did take me sometime to finish reading through all of them ! (For details of access to TraderMasterclass Library, CLICK HERE)

I treasure the wealth of knowledge contained within each and every book. No single book can ever cover everything about trading, TA or Finance, so we need to elicit relevant and practical information from a variety of expert sources in order to improve and widen our scope of understanding and eventual profitability. This we do through a positive feedback cycle of critical thinking, strategy refinement and active application, until consistency of results is achieved in our trading. Even a single idea can change one’s entire life! (Chaos Theory anyone?!) I sincerely recommend that you develop a habit of reading a book on a few levels, i.e. for its facts, concepts, basic meaning, meta-meaning and the possible ‘what-ifs’ scenarios. This will prepare and provide you with a strong foundation for your ‘real world’ evaluation and response to whatever market action that ensues. With that said, let us press on.

Further book reviews will be added periodically whenever possible. I have added brief reviews for the first 55 books in my library.

  1.
    1. Encyclopedia of Chart Patterns (Bulkowski)
The ultimate book on chart patterns: Very detailed with lots of accompanying statistics for each pattern. Bulkowski gives the following treatment format throughout the book for each pattern: Snapshots-Tours-Identification-Failures-Statistics-Trading Tactics-Sample Trade- Best Performance. I enjoyed the sections on ‘Best Performance’ which is about how to recognize a more reliable pattern setup, rather than just explaining what a pattern is. ‘Trading Tactics’ gives recommendations on how to best trade a particular pattern, followed swiftly by him giving a ‘Sample Trade’ via the use of a hypothetical character in a situation trading a particular pattern, with all the accompanying emotional responses and expectations that one might imagine occurs in real life. It’s the only book on chart analysis that does that!
    2. Trading Classic Chart Patterns (Bulkowski)
Another great book. Best part is the Case studies he gives for each chart pattern. Failure rating by way of the interesting ‘Horizon Failure Rates’ by David Ipperciel on each pattern gives a time element factor to pattern failure events !
    3. Getting Started in Chart Patterns (Bulkowski)
A portable reference. I enjoyed Chapter 11 (Art of Trading) with its Checklist & Tips. Chapter 12 provides a great performance and pattern Ranking reference table of most chart formations as a quick guide. Great beginner’s entry book.
    4. Martin Pring on Price Patterns (Pring)
Good treatment of traditional and shorter term patterns. Clearly written. The DVD of a live class session with Pring is particularly good for beginners. I like the ‘Psychological Rationale’ section he gives for each pattern. Comfortable read for novices.
    5. Seven Chart Patterns that Consistently Make Money (Ed Downs)
Really short book of 7 patterns. Brief description of patterns. Nevertheless, some ‘nuggets of wisdom’ there for complete novices. Possibly too brief and simplistic for most traders!
    6. Charting in a Nutshell (Hull)
A bit of everything about charting. A small book but touches on indicators, money management & computers in trading. Interesting is that it also gives Metastock formulas for some indicators ! (Especially the formula for the ‘adjusted’ ATR stop-loss !). Good ‘tour’ of topics but not detailed enough.
    7. Schwager on Futures: Technical Analysis
I rate this as one of the best TA books. Excellent coverage and lots of ‘real world’ anticipatory chart analysis examples. Covers systems and some basic quantitative analysis. (If you require QA, look to his other book instead (Book Review: 135,136). A MUST for the serious trader! Also, you can check out his amazing introductory text (as reviewed in Book Review: 17)
    8. A Short Course in Technical Analysis (Kaufman)
Gives a slightly more ‘detailed’ introduction to TA. Kaufman brings new understanding to traditional ideas. A good follow up read for the novice trader. Great questions (with answers!) for the practicing student at each chapter’s end. The trading games are excellent too. Check out his excellent compendium of trading concepts and systems in his other 2 books. (Book review: 107) & (Book Review: 56)
    9. Technical Analysis of Stock Trends 9th. Edition (Magee) 2007
Excellent updated version from 8th. Basically, mostly the same content but with some new and important additions and treatments esp. Dow Theory. (I would prefer AT LEAST some treatment on Cycle Analysis but look to Murphy’s book (Book Review: 11) for a traditional introduction to it, or to Ehlers books (Book Review: 116, 134) for a statistical treatment of it, and of course, to the man himself, Hurst!) Also do check out Appendix E for the detailed description of the Turtle System, courtesy of Curtis Faith. Interesting to compare and contrast this with Curtis’s new book ‘The Way of the Turtle’ (Book Review: 93.)
    10. Technical Analysis of Stock Trends 8th. Edition
Mother of all TA books. Now superceded by the 9th. edition. (See Book Review: 9)
    11. Technical Analysis of the Financial Markets (Murphy)
Very well written and an easier read than Magee. Good traditional coverage of the basic TA materials, and even manages to briefly ‘mention’ PnF-derived moving averages and Maximum Entropy Spectral Analysis (MESA, by Ehlers)! If you can afford to buy only one textbook, this is the one to have!
    12. The Illustrated Guide to Technical Analysis Signals & Phrases (Brown)
Unusual TA reference book. Nevertheless, it does highlight many important TA principles and concepts in her chart examples. No text at all, except for introduction where she touches on the VIX and TED Spreads. As the cover says, it is a visual dictionary! Could be a good complement to her other book on advanced TA. (Book review: 13)
    13. Technical Analysis for The Trading Professional (Brown)
Superb treatment of TA for advanced traders. Chapter 10 on Elliot Waves is excellent. So is her thought provoking approach to reverse engineering, indicator volatility bands, Fibonacci refinements and cycle analysis. She takes TA to a new level! (If this book proves too daunting, you can also start of with her entry level book on TA (Book Review: 18)) Also, check out her ‘visual dictionary of useful charts’ as a good complement to this advanced book (Book Review: 12). As they say, ‘A picture is worth a thousand words!’
    14. Technical Analysis from A to Z (Archelis)
Archelis produced a good basic reference guide to TA. Covers most concepts and indicators. Not as comprehensive as Kirkpatrick’s book (Book Review: 16) but it does treat many indicators to a greater depth. Not many books actually show you how to calculate the ‘Triangular Moving Average’ in detail!! ‘Dictionary-style’ format for easy perusal.
    15. The Encyclopedia of Technical Indicators (Colby)
A remarkable work on the profitability of various indicators as back-tested in the actual markets. It gives complete entry/exit rules and a systems report on equity line over the period. Interestingly, I need to bring to your attention about the actual results as Colby does not incorporate ‘real world’ stop losses in his testing procedure and hence will not reflect the real equity curve of actual traders trading the strategy. Still a very valuable reference to have as far as ‘mechanical’ trading studies are concerned.
    16. Technical Analysis (Kirkpatrick) 2007
An impressive coverage of TA and the industry. Sufficient width and depth on most topics (except for its treatment on Gann, which seems somewhat lacking!). A good chapter on cycles. An excellent reference book to have. (Also, if you have always wanted to know what Edwards, Magee and Wilder looked like, look no further!)
    17. Getting Started in Technical Analysis (Schwager)
One of the best introductory books on TA. Is has an element of his ‘real world’ chart analysis as per his main book (Book Review: 7). Chapter 11 is particularly informative on chart rules. Great treatment of trend following systems and its possible improvements. He also dissects system testing and the problems with optimization. Finally he summarizes everything into 82 important trading rules. There is even a chapter devoted to market ‘wizardom’ adapted from his super successful bestsellers ‘The Market Wizards’ (Book Reviews: 256, 257) Now, that’s the ‘icing’ on the cake!
    18. All About Technical Analysis ( Brown)
Constance’s book treats TA from a more ‘integrated’ approach, that is, by teaching the elements of TA within the context of Intermarket forces, relationships and its implications. Hence she does not teach you TA as an isolated discipline, but rather show you how to apply TA to gauge the entire market environment that you are trading in. She also did a very good summary of different approaches to TA. The chapter on ‘global market shock waves’ explains how connected the world markets are during market shocks. You could do well to check out her other excellent books on TA. (Book Reviews: 12, 13)
    19. How Technical Analysis Work (Kamich)
Not as detailed as Schwager’s book (17) and is a simple easy read for beginners. Devotes a full chapter on RSI and Stochastics. Very straight forward and super clear text in every aspect. Even though elementary in nature, the book still manages to explain the difference between the Wheelan vs. the Cohen method in point & figure charting!
    20. New Thinking In Technical Analysis (Bensignor) 2000
Good compilation of material from outstanding traders and gurus. You have Raschke, Demark, McMillan, Larry, Nison and more in one book. I personally enjoyed Market Profile by Mesch, Cycles by Eliades and Options Volatility by McMillan. There is a newer 2007 updated version out of this book. I would have really preferred if Raschke actually touched on her forte, which is short term trading techniques, rather than giving us an ‘overview’ of the history of TA and the basic elements of swing trading!
    21. Technical Analysis: Power Tools for Active Investors (Appel)
A more advanced treatment of MACD in this book, by its creator! He does a great job explaining the basic market environment first and its various sentiment, technical and momentum characteristics before delving into MACD per se.
(You will find Appel’s interesting TA insights scattered throughout this book, like the particularly catchy AB Angle Change Price Projection technique, even if it is just a passing comment by Appel!)
    22. Dynamic Technical Analysis (Cahen) 2001
Cahen presents us his dynamic interplay between MACD, SAR, Stochastics and Bollinger Bands in determining entry / exit point, via his ‘Triptych’, or as we would say in plain English, ‘Triple Time Frame’ analysis! His treatment of Bollinger Bands into ‘parallels and bubbles’ with regard to trend is interesting, esp. his analysis of price action and indicator within the Bands. John Bollinger himself admitted that he is impressed by Cahen’s work in this field! I really liked Cahen’s integration of regular divergence, statistical and traditional indicator confirmation / non-confirmation interplay.
    23. Essential Technical Analysis (Stevens)
Another really good and detailed introduction to TA. Very well written with all the important ‘trimmings and fine points’ included. Excellent treatment of indicators and basic TA techniques. Has really good depth as well as width. (Imagine a book actually listing out 8 qualifiers to consider before you take that divergence trade, for the best probability of success and avoidance of whips! Also, great calibration analyses of RSI for that ultimate trade, if you are sharp enough to have noticed it!) Enough said. Good enough for me!
    24. Technical Analysis: Plain and Simple (Kahn)
Kahn places more emphasis on market and price action, rather than giving an extensive study of all the various indicators and such. More on chart patterns, momentum, support / resistance and some divergence analysis. Indicators covered are RSI, Stochastics, OBV, Volume and Sentiment. Affordable and easy reading style for most.
    25. A Complete Guide to Technical Analysis (Person)
Person’s books are informative and insightful. Very good introductory coverage of basic concepts in TA, but esp. his P3T Pivot Point trade signal work, which he takes to the next level in his later book (Book Review: 73). If you like to apply all this to Forex, then check out his Forex book (Book Review: 191) Person illustrates clearly the interplay of Candlesticks, Indicators and Fibonacci on Pivot Points for the highest winning probability.
    26. Integrated Technical Analysis (Copsey)
Copsey integrates Elliot Waves, Moving averages, Cycle analysis and momentum indicators in a multi time-frame (MTF) approach. Great Elliot Wave work presented. But I am more impressed with his attention to details like distinguishing between Cutler’s and Wilder’s RSI. Also his take on multiple moving average crossovers ! He also compares and contrasts the responses of different stochastic settings. He then goes to the lengths of trying to solve the inherent weakness of ‘tail wagging the dog’ syndrome of momentum indicators by introducing elements of a weighted version of double smoothing for added desensitization ! A thorough analysis all round.
    27. Technical Analysis Explained (Pring)
Another ‘must have’ TA textbook for serious traders! Excellent coverage of nearly all important TA concepts. Fully recommended. Basic to Intermediate.
Excellent ‘value for money’ book on TA.
    28. Introduction to Technical Analysis (Pring)
For the total newbie to TA. Great text to accompany the CDROM. If you are looking for a softer and more relaxed introduction into TA, this is it. Clear, concise, well written and illustrated.
    29. World Technical Analysis Conference Manual 1995
A series of seminars compiled and organized by P.I. Capital Research Services (Fred Tam) in Asia in 1995. Excellent collection of works by the world’s top traders and gurus, e.g. Angell, Dorsey, Gilmore, Tharp, Larry & Bill Williams, Bierovic, Matheny & Wagner and Fred Tam. I enjoyed the work of Bierovic and his ‘Synergy and Art of Profitable Trading’, as well as with Fred’s detailed and wonderful ‘Triple Screen Stochastic’. Clearly illustrated!
    30. The New Science of Technical Analysis (DeMark) 1994
Great contributions from a legend in TA. His proprietary TA techniques set him apart from the crowd. This book introduces his concepts clearly. His acute and insightful treatment of price action is uncanny. His set ups are precise and so are the qualifiers. He expands on his ‘DeMark’ brand of TA analysis in his later book on timing techniques (See Book Review: 32)
Not easy reading in any sense of the word! But if you manage to thoroughly absorb his concepts, then you will have elevated you TA to stratospheric heights! Just prepare to bring your own supply of oxygen at those heights!
    31. Entries and Exits (Elder)
One of my must read book again. Provides you valuable peek into the secret world of another trader! In fact, all 16 of them. Amazing color charts and detailed explanations of each action and response initiated in the markets. You will see emotion first hand, discipline at work and the trading philosophies of many experienced traders from diverse backgrounds. It literally makes you feel as if you had been through the experience yourself, and that alone is worth the effort. You will have a new maturity in the markets after experiencing 16 separate trades and understanding the rationale and persuasive power of emotions behind their successes as well as setbacks.
    32. New Market Timing Techniques (DeMark)
As mentioned in review: 30 above, incredible exposition on timing and price action dynamics. Unfortunately, it can be heavy-going for many traders to sift through and isolated some of the techniques presented. Also, software implementation of many of DeMark indicators will be most welcomed as many of the manual calculations can be hazardous to your health! Only for the most passionate and determined!
    33. Evidence-Based Technical Analysis (Aronson) 2007
Aronson dissects TA and demonstrates its strength and weaknesses. Detailed coverage of the illusive nature of validating subjective TA, and deals with issues like the dreaded ‘confirmatory bias’, as well as many other types of inherent bias. He then goes on to explain the scientific process and statistical significance in back-tested TA results. He also examines systematic error in data-mining, as well as its possible usefulness. I most enjoyed Chapter 7 on ‘Theories of Non-Random Price Motion’, being a Technical Analyst myself. I guess it is always nice to entertain some sort of justification for TA! A must read for trading system developers. A logical book to follow through after this would be the book by Gary Norden. (See Book review: 38)
    34. Beyond Technical Analysis (Chande) 2001
Very good treatment of TA and very original. Even tough it was written primarily with the trading system developer in mind (which I assume few of us are!) you can still read it for its rich analysis of various TA strategies propounded. I particularly like the excellent way Chande uses ADX in his trading systems. His study of Channel Breakout systems, Equity Curve Analysis and profitability as a function of initial stop size is worth the read.
    35. Technical Analysis Applications (Luca)
A good general book on TA. Cover most basic TA stuff. But the jewel of the entire book for me must lie with Chapter 13 & 14 where Luca examines the relevant technical tool for each type of market and tables it according to the type of current market environment. Very handy indeed. (One strange point is that on the front cover it states that is covers ‘Quantitative Methods of Analysis’. I found out that that meant calculating MAs, oscillators and the like! Technically that is correct, but that term is usually reserved for stuff like Correlation / Regression, Time series Analysis, Probability Distributions, and so on, ala Wilmott!) Definitions aside, it’s a good introduction to TA.
    36. Profitability of Technical Analysis (Fred Tam)
A thorough examination of the efficacy of TA in real world markets. Fred makes his point clearly in a formal manner, and supports his conclusion with statistically significant tests, proving that TA has an ‘edge’ in the markets. He compares various trading systems and singles out the Channel Breakout. An excellent exposition on TA and EMH and its arguments. He also introduces his Proprietary F1 Trader Rule as a means of trading fast moving markets and catching reversals effectively. A worthwhile and challenging read for all TA skeptics out there.
    37. Everything Technical Analysis (Jacinta Chan)
An interesting but brief introduction to TA. Emphasis on Bollinger Band trades in the real world markets. Many valuable nuggets of information sprinkled throughout.
    38. Technical Analysis and the Active Trader (Norden)
Very provocative and bold. But it does drive home its points very clearly and succinctly. Touches on psychological biases, behavioral aspect of market action, general weaknesses of TA. It then goes on to suggest how we can improve our trading once we understand these pitfalls. Can be a hard pill to swallow for some hard-line TA supporters, but it will do you good and actually help you see through many assumptions and self induced illusions and biases, and ultimately improve your trading results. Reading it is like taking a strong dose medicine!
    39. The Definitive Guide to Point and Figure (Plessis) 2007
No doubt about it. I regard this as the best book ever written on pure PnF charting. It takes you through it construction process very slowly and thoroughly. It explains every detail explicitly. If you want to have intimate knowledge of PnF, look no further. Covers price targets, optimization, indicators and market breath applications. As a note here, Dorsey’s PnF book (See Book Review: 40) deals more with the Intermarket application and aspect of PnF charting rather than wholly on the PnF charting exclusively. Whereas Plessis deals with PnF exclusively. Also, great color charts and really nice & expensive paper quality. A joy to hold!
    40. Point and Figure Charting (Dorsey)
An excellent book on how to gauge market action using PnF. Dorsey stresses on Relative Strength, various market indicators with emphasis on NYSE Bullish Percent and Sector Analysis. A great book of real practical value to any investor. (See Book Review: 39 for comparison with Du Plessis) Incidentally, a more comprehensive 3rd. edition is out, but I have not looked at it as yet. Will do so in due course.
    41. The TrendAdvisor Guide to Breakthrough Profits (Dukas)
If you want to learn more about recognizing and intimately understanding the various stages in a market cycle, and the unique indicator behavior of each stage, then this is the book to pursue that further. Covers momentum, volume, Hi/Lo channels, and MAs and how each behaves at particular market stages. A real eye opener.
    42. Mastering The Trade (Carter)
Teaches you how to trade. Not a textbook on TA per se, but rather on trading setups itself with specific triggers and signals. Excellent for getting into the trading arena with all the necessary tools to succeed. Truly a valuable reference for all serious traders. Innovative use of indicators and price action itself. I particularly enjoyed the interplay between his use of Keltner Channels and Bollinger Bands to signify trading opportunities. Also great ‘gap trading’ setups and pivot point analysis. Impressive! Covers short term to intermediate term trading in most markets.
    43. The Ultimate Trading Guide (Hill)
The first half of the book deals extensively with price action and covers a very wide range of trading techniques. The second half is more on trading systems.
Talks briefly about optimization, money management and more. Good reference book to have if you want to learn to trade price action as well as learning what goes into setting up a trading system. Not as comprehensive as Kestner (Book: 108), Katz (Book: 109) or Stridsman (Books: 110,111) as far as trading systems go, but a good introduction to the topic nonetheless.
    44. Forecasting Financial Markets (Plummer)
Thorough investigation into the ‘psychology’ of the markets. Extensive coverage of Cycles, forecasting crowd behavior and market shocks. Good discussion on Emotions, ‘Psychological Matrix’ or Triad, and Fibonacci.
      Very interesting reading throughout!
    45. The Master Swing Trader (Farley)
The perfect ‘marriage’ between TA and trading strategy! Excellent application of TA. But to get the most out of this book, you will need to know your TA first. He delves right in and expects you to have some knowledge of TA. That said, this is another MUST read for serious traders. Great integration of various technical tools and indicators, in order to decipher and anticipate price action.
    46. Advanced Swing Trading (Crane)
Incredible price action analysis and market timing projections. Crane’s Proprietary Reaction Swings, Action / Reaction Lines, Reversal dates and using the Slow Stochastic as a timing indicator breathes new life into classical TA. Granted that it might not be easy at first to catch some concepts. But his approach is fairly unique, so be patient and take your time to absorb it. Give you some new tools and approaches to pursue.
    47. Market Evaluation and Analysis for Swing Trading (Nassar)
Very good account of TA presented in this book. Volume analysis, market tactics and psychology. Special mention here to ‘Stochastic Double Divergence’ which I found hard pressed to find anywhere else! Good explanation of Elasticity of price, Market Symmetry, application of ADX and equity play using traditional Moving Averages. Recommended reading.
    48. Swing Trading (Markman)
Good collection of different trading approaches from a few gurus. Good read.
    49. Day and Swing Trading (Pring)
A very good introduction by Pring to day & swing trading. Very clearly written and a lot of nice charts and figures to illustrate his point. Covers KST, Intermarket considerations and some 1-2 bar patterns. Good section on trading using Bollinger Bands. Comes with a great CDROM. Watch out for “Pring’s Law” of emotions!
    50. Tools & Tactics for the Master Day Trader (Velez).
Detailed look at Tick, Trin, New Lows and some Level 2 tactical manipulation. A balanced approach for day & swing, equity & options traders. Should be read in conjunction with ‘A trader on Wall Street’ by Coval (Book Review: 141). Once you have mastered these two, you can actually use long and short options strategies to play the market, using instrument and price leverage! (Instead of the conventional stock plays)
    51. Steidlmayer on Markets
Market profile from the originator. Gives the history of its development and rationale behind its evolution, and the usefulness of a Normally-Distributed arrangement of price and time. Great discussion about price and value. Covers Initial balance, TPOs, Non trend day, normal day, normal variation day, neutral day, Liquidity Bank and more. Talks about the ‘past tense’ normal distribution and his ‘present tense’ Steidlmayer Distribution. Psychology covers “Market Discipline’ and the contrast of short to longer term activity in relation to the trader emotions.
    52. Trading on Volume (Cassidy)
Open with discussion on Random Walk and Behavioral Finance. Explain effects of volume crescendos, spikes, Arm Index, price extremes and Low volume interpretation and misinterpretation. Good book on the topic.
    53. Techniques of Tape Reading (Schumacher)
Essentially on volume analysis, with the author’s treatment of volume at different market stages, with reference to basic chart patterns, capitulation and two of his own setups: Jump-Base Explosion (JBE) and Drop-Base Implosion (DBI).Lots of examples. I enjoyed this book.
    54. Momentum, Direction & Divergence (Blau) 1995
Great and very insightful book on smoothing effects, detrending, divergence, TSI and its derived Ergodics, stochastic momentum and more. Interesting is the discussion about the degree of lag on price determination in relation to the length of the moving average of momentum, and contrasts the double smoothing of price as opposed to momentum.
    55. High Performance Futures Trading (Robbins)
Collection of works from many great traders. Really informative and very wide coverage of trading concepts and methodologies. A MUST read for the serious trader. Covers Market Profile, Options on futures, Fibonacci Expansions, Indicators behavior, Sentiment, Seasonals, Moving Average trade, conserving capital and more. It has something for everyone!
